In 2015, the European Commission presented its strategy for creating a Digital Single Market in the European Union by removing regulatory barriers and moving from 28 fragmented national digital markets to a single one.

The strategy includes 16 individual initiatives which will support the development of EU-wide telecommunications networks and cross-border digital services and stimulate a new wave of innovative European startups. The European Commission’s principal objectives are to provide European citizens with the best possible digital services and to create a large digital single market for European companies.
